In 1982, Taiwan's film industry experienced a crisis. Apart from an invasion of Hong Kong films, military education films, love stories, and films about the underworld were ubiquitous. In addition, Taiwanese society - which had existed under martial law since the relocation of the Nationalist government to Taiwan - was changing as a result of the US severing diplomatic ties with Taiwan, and the Kaohsiung Incident, as well as many other blows. With the support of the CMPC (Central Motion Picture Corporation), a group of young directors set in motion a new wave of Taiwanese films. These filmmakers, all born after the war, chose to tell their own stories, write their own history, and even to challenge government bans head on.
