★ Director Lin Cheng-Sheng spent four years recording the life story of Chen Ming-Chang, a Taiwanese guru of music who, for four decades, brought music from Taiwan to the world Chen Ming-Chang began to listen to Western pop
music when he was young, including songs by the Beatles and Bob Dylan. As an autodidact,
he used to play and sing with a guitar. In the stifling social atmosphere of
Taiwan under martial law at that time, he felt happy and free when immersing
himself in music. So he decided to become a musician. Deeply touched by Chen
Da's chanting and yueqin playing, he later decided to learn about songs and
music around Taiwan. He traveled and learned traditional opera and music with
teachers around the island and integrated these elements into his composition
of numerous tunes and tales about Taiwan.
The audience is led into Chen’s psyche and life by
looking at his creative process, including works ranging from film scores for
international productions to songs and music for stage plays. At the same time,
the songs in the film make one perceive the evolution of Taiwan's social
atmosphere during and after the period of martial law, an evolution from
autocracy to democracy. These songs flow and sway, which become part of the ambience
of the times and society and link to our collective memories about the land. |
