Synopsis :

The islands of Kinmen, a part of Taiwan, occupy a special strategic geographical position: they are only 10 kilometers off the shore of the Chinese mainland. Today, the place attracts tourists for specific traces preserved therein: relics of civil wars between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party as well as peculiar historical marks of an era of confrontation between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait. Through a gentle gaze, Taiwanese-American director Sung-Chang Leo Jiang masterly interweaves footage of tourists on the islands with sequences of local people’s daily lives, giving a first-person account of his paradoxical identity based on a struggle between the relationship between Taiwan, mainland China, and the United States. Based on Jiang’s observations and presented to an international audience, this film explores the underlying instability on these islands and a peaceful state maintained through long years of endeavor, reflecting on the uncertainty faced by Taiwan regarding its future in the international community.
