Biography: |
CHU Tien-Wen was born in 1956. Under the influence of her novelist father and mother, who translates many Japanese novels, CHU began writing novels when she was in high school. She and her sister, CHU Tien-hsin(朱天心), are considered two of the most important modern novelists in contemporary Taiwan. In 1982 CHU Tien-Wen entered into the world of cinema. She co-wrote a film script with HOU Hsiao-Hsien(侯孝賢) based on her own novel. The film “Growing Up,”(小畢的故事) directed by CHEN Kun-Hou(陳坤厚), is considered one of the important works in the Taiwanese New Wave. Since then CHU developed close relationships with directors, scriptwriters and film critics who helped forming the New Taiwan Cinema Movement. She then wrote the script for HOU’s “The Boys from Fengkuei”(風櫃來的人). Afterwards, CHU has collaborated with HOU in all of his films, either writing original scripts or adapting screenplay for the screen. “A Summer at Grandpa’s”(冬冬的假期) is known as a semi-autobiography of herself. |
