For the past 50 years, Taiwan has experienced unprecedented economic and political changes in its history. Facing the impact of modernization, the traditional organization, values, lifestyle have gradually modernized. Women who were born at that time, now aged above 50, have experienced the overlapping life experience of tradition and modernization, encountering the contradictory values with next generations. Four years ago, the director decided to make a documentary about the stories of her 4 aunts, who are traditional Hakka women, born in the Meinung which is a traditional rural town in the south of Taiwan, at the time around the ending of the Japanese colonial rule. Through their stories, we see the huge differences among generations have influenced their life. Behind the serenity of their daily life, their stories epitomize the history of women who have lived through that time. The director was a second-generation Taiwanese Hakka who was brought up in city. As she returned to Meinung, her origin, she explored for the admirable image of Hakka women that was lost in the Hakka culture. During the interview with four aunts about their personal life, the director discovered the family history behind all these life stories and how these women were impacted by the admirable traditional virtue of Hakka women.
