Titisi wakes up to sunlight one morning as usual. She brings the wash basin and toothbrush to help Grandma wash up only to find that Grandma is never to wake up again. Memories start flooding back in Titisi’s mind: How Grandma frequently talked to Hwee Hwee in her room, the lost daughter whom Titisi has never met. How Grandma tries to control Titisi in the same way as she did Hwee Hwee, in order to keep Titisi safe from the cruelty of the outside world. Despite Grandma’s caution, Titisi meets a man and falls in love, believing that he is her future. But as Grandma becomes senile because of an illness, Titisi finds that she is also losing her sense of self as she becomes more and more disillusioned with her love. Titisi realizes that both women are puppets controlled by destiny, and that despite Grandma’s controlling and senile behavior, Grandma is the only person who would stand by Titisi through the harshness of this world and give her the warmth that she needs.
