GIO invites representatives of mainland China's cinema industry here to see the thriving state of Taiwan's film industry

With the inking of the cross-strait Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement, the previous quotas placed by mainland authorities on the number of Taiwanese films allowed to be screened in the mainland have been lifted. In light of this hugely positive development, the Executive Yuan's Government Information Office (GIO) recently invited representatives of the mainland's cinema industry to an event here to promote Taiwanese films. The GIO also said it welcomes cooperation among the film industries of the two sides. A number of Taiwanese directors and filmmakers were on hand for the event. In remarks at the event, the Director of GIO Motion Picture Affairs Department Director Chu Wen-ching commented that Taiwanese films have turned in stellar performances recently at the domestic box office and at international film festivals. Amid warming relations between the two sides, increasingly frequent exchanges are being seen between the film industries from Taiwan and mainland China, Chu said. With more attention being placed on this interaction, Chu said that he hopes this event will help to foster even greater mutual understanding. He closed his remarks by inviting everyone to raise their glasses to good fortunes for cinematic cooperation between the two sides in the future. Beijing Galloping Horse Film Co., Ltd. Vice President Guo Yan spoke on behalf of the mainland cinema industry representatives, saying that the mainland deems cooperation with its Taiwanese counterparts as an important development. Guo specifically cited cooperation between B'in Music and Doble Edge Entertainment in the production of MayDay 3DNA. In the future, Guo said, more Taiwanese films will be able to enter the mainland, helping to create a greater level of cultural exchange between the two sides, he said. Central Motion Picture Corp. Chairman Guo Tai-chiang stated that his production house has a history dating back over five decades and that Jump Ashin, a film by Lee Lie in which Central Motion Picture has invested, has already generated a box office of NT$70 million. Meanwhile, the highly anticipated Seediq Bale will soon hit the theatres, he said. Guo said that Central Motion Picture in the future will not rule out any method of cooperation, hoping to build even closer interaction with its mainland counterparts. Doble Edge Entertainment director Chen Hung-yuan said he hopes this activity will enable industry representatives from the mainland to see the thriving state of Taiwan's film industry and set the foundation for greater interaction between the two sides.
