Director
Tai-Li Hu was a Taiwanese pioneer of ethnographic documentaries. She earned a bachelor’s degree in history from the National Taiwan University as well as a master’s degree and a doctor’s degree in anthropology from the Graduate School of the City University of New York. Since 1979, she worked as a research fellow at the Institute of Ethnology, Academia Sinica in Taiwan. She engaged in ethnographic research by writing and filming and published books such as Cultural Performances and Taiwan Aborigines and Introduction to Daughter-in-law: Field Research in Video. Her documentaries include Encountering Jean Rouch, Sounds of Love and Sorrow, and Passing Through My Mother-in-law's Village which was Taiwan's first documentary screened in a commercial theater (in Wonderful Theater, Taipei, in 1997). This film received an overwhelming response beyond expectation, gradually building an audience for documentaries. In 2000, Hu served as the first chairman of Taiwan Association of Visual Ethnography and curated two versions of Taiwan International Ethnographic Film Festival during her tenure, which were well received.
She died of illness in May 2022.
