After earning a master’s degree from Department of Fine Arts of National Taiwan Normal University, Hui-Ling Chen served as a full-time teacher in Saint Ignatius High School. After leaving the job, she studied cinema in France and made the documentary A Letter to A'ma by collaborating with many schools across Taiwan through the "Teaching Project on the Island's Collective Memory", guiding students to describe family memories with pictures and seeking the island's memory and multicultural identity together. The documentary won Best Documentary, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Film Score at the 6th SMR13 International Independent Film Festival as well as Golden Award of the 28th Women Make Waves Film Festival. It was also nominated for Best Documentary Feature of the 58th Golden Horse Awards.
