CHI Po-Lin

Director

Born in Taipei City in 1964, Chi Po-lin had worked as a civil servant in the Ministry of Transportation and Communication whose duties often required him to take aerial photographs for 23 years. In 2009, Taiwan's mountain forests were severely damaged by Typhoon Morakot. Chi went examining the damage by helicopter right after the disaster, and was sadden to see the situation in disaster areas. Hence, he quitted his job to engage in making documentaries.

Being touched by Chi's rushes, directors and artists including Hou Hsiao-hsien, Wu Nien-jen and Lin Hwai-min provided Chi resources and financed him to make the first Taiwan aerial photography documentary titled "Beyond Beauty- Taiwan From Above," which not only won the Golden Horse Award for best documentary feature in 2013 but also performed well at the box office.

In June, 2017, Chi died in helicopter crash during his location scouting for "Beyond Beauty II." His tragic death was mourned by many people in Taiwan.
