Feng-I Fiona Roan graduated from Department of Chinese Literature of National Taiwan University and earned an MFA degree in directing from American Film Institute. Her short film Jiejie won several awards, including Audience Award of Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia (one of the three major short film festivals), Special Mention of Kaohsiung Film Festival, the second place in the 2018 HBO APA Visionaries Short Film Competition, and was nominated for Golden Harvest Awards. The film was further selected into over 40 film festivals, including Taipei Film Festival, Women Make Waves International Film Festival, Melbourne International Film Festival, etc.
Her feature film American Girl was an adaptation of her story of immigrating to the U.S. and returning to Taiwan. Initially selected into Golden Horse Film Project Promotion in 2018, this film was nominated for seven awards at the 58th Golden Horse Film Festival, including Best Narrative Feature, and won five awards, including Best New Director and Audience Choice Award. Feng-I Fiona Roan became the first female to win Best New Director in the history of Golden Horse Awards.
