In 1982, Taiwan's film industry experienced a crisis. Apart from an invasion of Hong Kong films, military education films, love stories, and films about the underworld were ubiquitous. In addition, Taiwanese society - which had existed under martial law since the relocation of the Nationalist government to Taiwan - was changing as a result of the US severing diplomatic ties with Taiwan, and the Kaohsiung Incident, as well as many other blows. With the support of the CMPC (Central Motion Picture Corporation), a group of young directors set in motion a new wave of Taiwanese films. These filmmakers, all born after the war, chose to tell their own stories, write their own history, and even to challenge government bans head on. Close
