A silver hairpin belonging to grandma allows the director to walk into her father\'s world, and discover the deep reminiscence of these old veterans. Through this epic documentary we can see how the ideological war left grave scars on everyone involved- those who participated by force or voluntarily. At the end of the civil war in China, the director\'s father joins the army to head back home. However, he is forced to remain in Taiwan. After 40 years of separation and yearning, he returns, only to realize his homeland is gone forever. He cannot even find his mother\'s silver hairpin, the only object that holds the painful memories about his family parted by force. When the director\'s father reunites with his old army friends at the Veteran Hospital, their voices do not speak of anger-nor do they shed any tears.
