In 2002, Tseng Wen-Chen won the Golden Horse Award for Best Documentary for “Spring: The Story of Hsu Chin-Yu.” The film was also selected into domestic and international film festivals, including the Fribourg International Film Festival in Switzerland, and was nominated for the Humanitarian Awards for Documentary at Hong Kong International Film Festival. In 2003, she directed the biographical documentary “A Legend Crosses Three Centuries: Madame Chiang Kai-Shek” about the first lady Soong Mei-Ling; the documentary for the Public Television Service (PTS) broke PTS's record for overseas copyright sales and won the Golden Eagle Award in the United States, receiving widespread acclaim both domestically and internationally. In 2005, Tseng's first feature film, “Fishing Luck,” was selected for the "Winds of Asia" section of the 18th Tokyo International Film Festival, the "APEC" section of the 10th Busan International Film Festival, the Asian World Film Festival in Los Angeles, and the 16th Fukuoka International Film Festival, etc.
Tseng excels at shooting documentaries about people and particularly at depicting women of the times, portraying delicate and moving emotions and representing brave and beautiful lives.
In recent years, she has been making documentaries about disadvantaged groups, including "What Makes Love Last” (2015) about caregivers, “Love before Sunset" (2019) about elders living alone, and "The Lucky Woman" (2020) about missing migrant workers, which was selected for the New Asia Currents Competition at the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival in Japan.
