Charlie Young was born in Taiwan. Her father is a Hong Kong native of Shanghai origin and her mother is Taiwanese. Her family moved to Hong Kong when she was three. She went to study in the U.S. at the age of 15, returned to Hong Kong three years later to develop her acting career, and made her debut at the age of 18. In the 1990s, she was known as the “new sweetheart”, and her career prospered. She released albums and performed for music videos and many movies by famous directors, including Kar-Wai Wong's Ashes of Time and Fallen Angels, Hark Tsui's The Lovers, Jacob Cheung's Intimates, etc. She also co-starred with Nicky Wu and Takeshi Kaneshiro in Young Policemen in Love. A superstar in the making, she suddenly announced her retirement. At the age of 23, she decided to operate a business with her boyfriend Shao-Tze Khoo. They parted 6 years later, and she returned to her acting career, starring in several movies, such as Jackie Chan's New Police Story, Hark Tsui's Seven Swords, and Patrick Tam's After This Our Exile and Cold War. In recent years, she starred in Hello! Tapir.
