Born in 1954, LEE Ping-Bing joined Taiwan’s major film studio Central Motion Pictures Corp. (CMPC中央電影公司) as a camera assistant in 1977. He was involved in the early, pioneering days of the Taiwanese New Wave. Since “A Time to Live and A Time to Die,”(1985,童年往事 ) LEE has collaborated with HOU Hsiao-Hsien(侯孝賢) on “Dust in the Wind,”(1986,戀戀風塵) which won the Cinematography Award at the Nante Three Continents Film Festival, “City of Sadness,”(1989,悲情城市) and “The Puppetmaster,”(1993,戲夢人生) winner of the Best Cinematography Award at Taipei Golden Horse Film Awards. LEE’s other film works with HOU include “Goodbye South, Goodbye,”(1996,再見南國再見) “Flowers of Shanghai,”(1998,海上花) “Millennium Mambo” (2000,千禧曼波), which won the Best Cinematography Award at Taipei Golden Horse Film Awards, and “Kohi Jikou.”(2003,咖啡時光) In 1988, when Taiwan film industry began its downfall trajectory, LEE was invited to work in Hong Kong film industry. He had worked for Ann HUI’s(許鞍華) “My American Grandson,”(1990,上海假期) “Summer Snow,”(1994,女人四十) winner of the Best Cinematography Award at Taipei Golden Horse Film Awards, and “Eighteen Springs.”(1997,半生緣) His work with WONG Kar Wai(王家衛) in “In the Mood for Love”(花樣年華) had won him the Prix du Jury a Un Technicien at the Canne Festival, as well as Best Cinematography Awards in the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival and the Asia-Pacific Film Festival. LEE is now based mainly in both Hong Kong and Los Angeles. His most recent works include “At the Height of Summer,” (夏天的滋味) (2000, directed by Tran Anh Hung 陳英雄) and “Spring in a Small Town.”(小城之春)(2002, directed by Tian Zhuangzhuang田壯壯) |
