HSU Hsiao-Ming

HSU Hsiao-ming was a graduate of filmmaking at World College of Journalism, now renamed Shih Hsin University. Since graduation HSU went to work as assistant director for veteran directors like LI Hsin and CHANG Pei-chen. He was assistant director to HOU Hsiao-Hsien’s “A Time to Live and A Time to Die.” In 1992, with the help from HOU, HSU Hsiao-ming directed his debut feature film “Dust of Angels.” He set up his own film company in 1993 to produce and direct his second feature “Heartbreak Island.” His first two films were invited to Cannes, Toronto, and Rotterdam film festivals. His TV drama serials “Summer Afternoon” and “Once Upon a Time” were very popular and won critical acclaims. HSU made a feature documentary film “Homesick Eyes” in 1997, which won him the Fipresci Award at Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival, Humanity Award at Berlin Film Festival and First Prize at Hawaii Film Festival. Since the making of “Homesick Eyes” HSU began his collaboration with Peggy CHIAO. They established Arc Light Films in 1996. HSU was the producer for “HHH: A Portrait of Hou Hsiao-Hsien” by French director Olivier ASSAYAS. He was also the producer of “Betelnut Beauty” (愛你愛我directed by LIN Cheng-seng, winner of the Best Director Award at Berlin Film Festival), “Beijing Bicycle” (十七歲的單車directed by Wang Xiaoshuai王小帥, winner of the Silver Bear Jury Prize at Berlin Film Festival) and YEE Chih-yen’s (易智言) “Blue Gate Crossing” (藍色大門), winner of many international awards. Currently HSU is making his third feature film “Pigeon,”(五月之戀) a film about how a young boy and a mid-age man bumped into each other and discovered something missing from their life. This films is part of a six-film project by Arc Light collectively titled “Tales of Three Cities” (三城記)
