In a sudden afternoon thunderstorm, Feng and Fei-Fei meet. Feng, fresh out of the army, is so eager to start a new life. Fei-Fei has also recently turned a new page in her young life. She ran away once from home where her mother and she bicker constantly. Fei-Fei teams up with her friend, Yili, who works at a nightclub. They become "betelnut beauties" hawking their fare from a roadside stall of glass and neon. Yili wants to break up with her boyfriend, Tiger, a gangland soldier with a penchant for violence. She and Fei-Fei seek shelter from Guang, another street tough and the brother-in-law of Tiger's mafia boss. Guang lords over "Betelnut Beauty Street." Feng doesn't want to go back to baker's job that had been consuming his life. He moves into a terrace apartment then he encounters with Fei-Fei. They quickly fall in love, two clueless souls clinging desperately to each other as they try to keep up with the punishing rush of city life. But Feng soon induced by Guang and gets himself involved in petit crazy crime. Later, when Tiger discovers that Yili is hiding under Guang's wings, he goes after his blood brother. Bad blood develops after an ugly confrontation at the Street. Guang decides to wage revenge and he takes Feng along for the ride. They rob a gambling den managed by Tiger. Feng asks Fei-Fei to quit. He even goes back to baking to support her. Meanwhile, Fei-Fei is discovered accidentally by the entertainment industry and being groomed as a singer. But fate often takes absurd turns. Tiger kidnaps Guang and executes Feng in front of his gang. Close
