Hung Hung

Hung Hung is the pen-name of Yen Hung-ya, a well-known talent in literature, performing arts and cinema in Taiwan. Born in 1964 in Taiwan, he is a graduate of the Theatre Department of National Institute of the Arts, and is an award-winning poet and author of five volumes of poetry, short fiction, intimate essays and theatre criticism. He was the chief editor of PERFORMING ARTS REVIEW and THE MODERNIST POETRY, both the leading publications in their respective fields in Taiwan. Hung Hung is both the artistic director and stage director of STALKER THEATER GROUP, founded by him in 1994. He was one of the scriptwriters of Edward Yang's(楊德昌) tow films, "A Brighter Summer Day" (牯嶺街少年殺人事件, 1991), which garnered the Golden Horse Award for Best Original Screenplay, and "A Confucian Confusion." (獨立時代, 1994) Hung Hung has also directed more than a dozen plays, two operas, and three films.

In 2000 he was the programmer of "Taiwan Literary Theater"(台灣文學劇場) series for Crown Theater in Taipei. In 2003 he was the curator of the "Shakespeare in Taipei"(莎士比亞在台北) series for the National Theater of Taiwan.

Between August 1996 and July 1997 Hung Hung was invited as an artist in residence in Cite Internationale Des Arts in Paris.

His first film, "The Love of Three Oranges," (三橘之戀, 1998) was invited to the Venice International Film Festival in 1999. It won the 'Prix FIPRESCI' at the Chicago Film Festival and won the 'Best Director Award' at the Festival of the 3 Continents in France in the same year. "The Human Comedy,"(人間喜劇) his second film, has won the 'Prix du Public' at the Festival of the 3 Continents in 2001, and the 'Best Film Award' in the 2nd Muscat Film Festival. His latest film "A Garden in the Sky,"(空中花園) a digital film full of visual excitements and fantastic imagination, was invited as the opening film of the 2nd Purely 16 Independent Film Festival in Taiwan. It was also selected by the 2003 Moscow International Film Festival, and was awarded the 'Best Art Direction Award' in 2002 Taipei Film Festival. Hung Hung is now seeking an opportunity to realize his new project "The Wall Passer."
