Originally a theatre designer, Hui-Li Liao started to work on films with Ang Lee's Life of Pi. She was nominated for Best Art Direction of the 38th Hong Kong Film Awards with Journey to the West: The Demons Strike Back. For her work for The Soul, she won Best Art Direction of the 58th Golden Horse Awards and was nominated for Best Art Direction of the 23rd Taipei Film Awards.
