1082 Song Dynasty. Su Dongpo is exiled to Huangzhou, where he becomes dejected, and creates The Cold Food Observance. 1922 The Cold Food Observance is taken to Tokyo, where it becomes buried by the Kanto Earthquake, only to be later saved from the rubble. 1945 The Cold Food Observance survives World War II, after which it passes numerous hands and eventually winds up in Taiwan.2004 In Taipei, the life of retired Uncle Chao, and some of Jing’s most precious childhood memories, becomes the subject of Dongheng’s writings. Jing and Dong-heng meet Eiichiro Shima, a Japanese who was recentlydemoted in the large corporation he works for due to internal politics. Jing and Dong-heng discover that the twisting, turning history of The Cold Food Observance is somehow related to a secret deep in Shima’s heart. Close
